February 2007 Archives
So, it was… kinda boring. I’m only there till Friday, which is nice, rather then a whole week. I’m actually hoping that i get called for a trial as the waiting around is, well, just like waiting around. Actually it wasn’t that bad, as i had some music on my phone, and i managed to read a whole novel - “Whit” by Ian Banks. I had not read any of his non-scifi books before, so i wasn’t sure what to expect. It was a very enjoyable read, I’ll probably be taking another of his novels tomorrow. I could take the laptop, for watching some DVDs or programming or whatever. Its just kind of a pain to lug around. Its nice to have the time to power through a book in one day - haven’t had the chance to do that in ages.
So its time to preform my civic duty tomorrow… I think i need to go and make sure i’ve got some reading material to keep me occupied! I have no idea how long i’ll be “on call”, they say 3 to 5 days, so that is into next week. I will report back after my session tomorrow and let you know the thrilling details. I’m sure i won’t be picked as a juror - i’m way too opinionated, and not in the good way that most lawyers might want, or so i think…
Well, it was a lot of fun. We had to sit quite close to the screen as the only place we could all get seats together was up front. Looked great, had all the lines one would like to hear from the comic in it. The only misstep was a lame story involving the Queen back at home. One of our group hadn’t read the book, and he quite enjoyed it too, so there is the stamp of approval from a slightly more impartial participant.
Was having a conversation with clem about hooking up for some food. It was suggested that we have lunck. Well, i thought to myself, why not! I have decided that lunch will from now on be known as lunck. Excellent!
What did you have for lunck today?
Was blessed with an opportunity to see the 300 tonight! I’ve been looking forward to this film for a while. I really like the graphic novel that it is taken from, and the trailer looks great, as has all the released video to date.
I’ll let you all know what i think of it tomorrow.
This note if for those of you that a) are still reading this blog b) have tried to comment but have been unable to.
So, i figure this impacts about… 0 people.
The other night during bath, Conor and i had a conversation which started off with a question about how girls pee, because they don’t have penises. After getting through that one, he then hit me with a ‘where do babies come from’ question. As my brain slowly melted, i tried to figure out how to make it high-level enough to answer his question without getting into non-age appropriate stuff. We talked about how they grow in women’s bellies, not their stomachs, and that women have a special place to grow babies in, the uterus, which men don’t have. Next was wondering about how they got out. Finally, how they go in. At first i seized up, but then i realized there was a simple answer - “they just grow there”, which was enough for him. You just NEVER KNOW what they are going to ask you. Be prepared! (i have no idea how you could ever be prepared for all the things you are going to be asked, but i felt that i needed to get this warning out)
I’ve been powering through the archives of Questionable Content, a web-comic i just found out about. And, like, holy cow are there ever a lot to get through. I love finding these several years after they have started, as you get to ingest years worth of story in on fell swoop (and risk the wrath of your sweetie who hates it when you stay up all night because it makes you into a crankipus). You also get to watch the style of the artists work change and evolve over the course of several years worth of strips. Same with MegaTokyo, where you can really see the improvement in the quality and skill of the artist, both in terms of the drawing but also the story telling.
Hurm, what other comics do i read regularly that i can link too? AppleGeeks. OrneryBoy. I guess that’s about it…
UPDATE Also Wapsi Square.
I’ve been working with Clem on http://www.jeremytankard.com, which just went live today.
I’m very happy with how it came out. Clem’s great design and Jeremy’s awesome art make for a wonderful looking site. My contribution was to wire it all into MovableType, which allows Jeremy, the client, to update the content easily. Everything is contained within MT’s interface, from adding new illustrations, sketches and news to the Ask Me form.
Jeremy seems very pleased, and i hope that making the process of updating the site as easy as possible will allow him to keep it fresh and new.
Also, I’d like to pimp his new book. It’s a great kids book, so if you are looking for a gift for a child, you should check it out.
