If you remember my bellyaching about bookmarking woes (1 2), i’ve found the perfect solution! It has the two most important factors that i require - Backup/Replication and tagging (a-la del.icio.us). Using the following two firefox add-ons provide this bliss:

Caveats Foxmarks by default sync’s to their own server, however you can set it up to use your own server, keeping your data on your own hardware, nice! The Bookmark Tags plug-in will wreak havoc on your bookmarks folder hierarchy, so if you are not prepared to use it completely, for all your searching/browsing, you might want to test it out first on a fresh install, so it doesn’t mess with your current bookmarks…

Computer Museum?

I’ve been wondering what to do with some of my old technology for a while now. I have multiple Palm Pilots, a newton, a TI-99 and other odds and ends. I have other friends with similar problems - a bunch of old tech that they don’t want to get rid of, mostly for nostalgic or historic reasons. I’ve been thinking about a computer museum for a while now, but different from the excellent Personal Computer Museum in Brantford. I’m interested in more personal descriptions of how the different devices affected their users. We keep these things around because they point to a time in our life when they had a particular purpose and meaning. That is what i’d like to capture, the stories that go with the technology, rather then just the tech itself.

So, since starting a brick and mortar museum is pretty difficult, i will start with a virtual one. Rui, another interested soul with a large stock of tech ‘stuff’, and i are going to do a photo shoot in October, to get some of the ‘stuff’ into a digital format. Then we need to write the stories which will go with the devices.

One of the important things, for me, is to have it be “open”. Open to others to add their stories about the tech, and possibly adding their own tech to the museum. I’m not sure how that part is going to work yet. This idea is still quite fresh in my mind. But, it is, i think, the main point of departure from other Computer or Technology museums.

Champs-Élysées of germs

Ok ok, i’m getting sick (haha) of these dumb titles too. Conor is still going strong, seems to have weathered it all with nary an effect. Ciara and i are still under its thumb but Rory is managing to shrug it off quite well. On the whole, it could have been worse. That is all for now.

Bagshot row of germs

Things were better last night. Rory wasn’t making us think he had stopped breathing or was choking to death every 1 minute! I took the early shift, so Ciara could get some sleep, which seemed to help with keeping her developing cold at bay. Ya for sleep! However, it did mean that i got a wee bit less, but hey, it only effects my productivity at work, right? At least i’m not operating heavy machinery! It was also hotter then hell (for the date) last night, which never helps - sweaty jos is not a happy daddy! And Rory doesn’t really like getting all sweaty either, but i can’t help it, after an hour of walking around in circles singing “rock-a-bye baby” in 85% humidity makes me sweat!

Den of germs

Gaaaa. Well it was bound to happen. Conor goes back to school and, whamo, we all get sick. On the plus side, Conor’s cold isn’t really bugging him at all, and mine isn’t too bad. On the negative side, Rory has also gotten it, and last night was a symphony of sniffles, choking and crying. Poor little guy. Ciara is also starting to come down with it. I can only hope that mine is better by tomorrow, so we are not all in full sick at the same time!

Other then the germs, things have been going well. Rory has lots of gas, and reflux, which can make him cranky, but he is already starting to smile, which makes up for just about anything. And hey, its not his fault his body is causing him all this trouble!

Conor is enjoying school, although he missed his first week because of, that’s right, another illness. That one was much worse - he was all flu-y and fever-y. Other then that, school has been great. Last night he was telling us that a paleontologist was coming to the class today, which would be Conor’s first choice of what to be when he grows up, but it turns out is just a regular ‘scientist’. I’m sure he will cope.

We also managed to get out to see Tony and Wendy’s baby Adelaide on the weekend. Very cute!

Hurm, what else… Oh ya, last Thursday i got a chance to play with one of them fancy iPhones Apple is making. Pretty keen. I’d go on about it, but i figure they have gotten enough buzz already.
